Though the development of sport climbing in San Vito lo Capo seems just to be in its beginning, the area in the north-west of Sicily acquired already a reputation to be one of the most important European sun-rock destinations.
2009 the area was introduced for the first time in a climbing magazine. Still in the same year the first San Vito-climbing festival took place which was repeated in 2010 and became already in its second year an important international event with some hundred participants. The area itself offers at present time more than 500 sport climbing routes as well as numerous multi-pitch climbs, some of them in trad stile, some protected well like sport climbing routes.
Thanks to the moderate climate - during Christmas time the average temperatures are still around 14-18°C - the area is perfectly suited for the cooler season and is probably one of the rare real European winter destinations of a certain importance.
Together with the excellent air-connections and cheap flights to both nearby airports Birgi-Trapani and Palermo and furthermore the excellently situated campsite "El Bahira" at the base of the 5 km long cliff "Scogliera di Salinella" (even offering special prices for climbers) San Vito is very close to be the paradise for climbers. The fact that a big part of the climbing area as well as the camping are lying in close vicinity to the beach and that the infrastructure of the small town San Vito (beach, supermarket, bakery, hotels, B & B, holiday flats, etc) offers all you can imagine for a perfect holiday is simply the icing on the cake.
Here a short summary of the most important facts:
Air connections: The airline Ryanair operates cheap flights to Birgi-Trapani. Be careful when comparing prices of chap airlines, often you have to pay extra for your luggage! Extremely chap flights are operated from Milano to Palermo, amongst others there are also direct flights operated by Lufthansa. From Munich, Stuttgart and other international airports the airline Air Berlin is also a good option! Topo: End of March 2011 the 1st edition of the guidebook "Sicily-Rock" was published by the GEBRO Verlag publishing house. The book introduces detailed the area San Vito lo Capo/Castelluzzo/Custonaci and describes the climbing with big-sized, clear photo-topos and many action-photos. In the book you will also find useful info and weblinks for planning your holiday. (Note: 2024 the 9th edition of the guidebook "Sicily-Rock" was published)
